FAQ: Window Blinds
When you find yourself choosing window blinds for your home, it’s always a good idea to get as much information as possible. Here are some of our top questions we get regularly. If you have more, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
What’s the difference between blinds and shades?
You might hear the term “blinds” anytime someone is talking about window coverings. It’s often used interchangeably with other coverings. However, blinds are considered hard treatments, made of non-flexible materials, featuring adjustable slats that open and close to control the light and privacy. Window shades are made of fabric, typically seen as window coverings that roll up out of the way, or stack as they raise.
Are blinds child safe?
Yes, today’s window blinds are constructed with strict guidelines with the safest operating systems. There are no more dangling cords that could be a danger to children or pets. Our wood blinds, metal blinds and composite blinds are all operated with the “spring rise” system. This cordless system allows you to pull the blinds all the way down to the bottom of the windowsill to attach it to brackets that hold the blind down and in place. When lowered, the slats can be adjusted open or closed for view-through and lighting. When you want to put the window blind back to the top of the window, you simply pulled down slightly to detach it from the brackets and let it rise up.
What materials are blinds made out of?
Hunter Douglas blinds come in three types of blinds: wood blinds, metal blinds and faux wood blinds. The wood blinds are made of real wood, responsibly harvested for sustainability, and finished in beautiful paints and stains. Metal blinds are constructed of aluminum, with the ability to bounce back from normal wear and tear. They are designed with metallic finishes for a stunning design element. Faux wood blinds are constructed of a composite material and sealed with finishes to protect the strength and durability of the slats. These window blinds are a great option for sunrooms and bathrooms–areas that see high humidity and direct light.
Do blinds offer room darkening?
Blinds can stop a majority of light at the window with the slats closed, but they aren’t typically considered the best choice for room darkening. Slivers of light can seep in where slats close, or along the edges of the window. If you love the look of blinds and want to increase the light control, we often recommend layering draperies with them so you can double up on the control.
Where can I see blinds in person?
We have a window treatment showroom located in Bedford for you to browse window covering products, features and materials. You can ask questions about the products and explore the operating systems to find what fits you best!
